A 55-year-old British man was killed after a massive avalanche swept him away in the French Alps on Tuesday, January 28. According to local authorities, the slide occurred in an off-piste area of the Grands Montets ski resort in the Chamonix Valley, near Mont Blanc.
The avalanche, described as “very large,” measured over 3,300 feet (1,000 meters) long and 1,300 feet wide (400 meters) wide. Ski patrol members discovered the victim’s partially exposed body, just his elbow was visible, at approximately 4:35 p.m. while preparing to close the slopes for the day. Despite swift helicopter assistance from medics, the skier was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities confirmed that the avalanche risk level was rated four out of five on the European Avalanche Danger Scale, indicating a “high” danger level due to unstable snowpack and strong winds. The exact cause of the avalanche remains under investigation, with officials unable to determine whether the skier or natural conditions triggered it.
The rescue operation was suspended late Tuesday evening due to worsening weather and the heightened risk of additional avalanches. During a two-hour search of the area, no other victims were found.
The Haute-Savoie prefecture has urged skiers to adhere strictly to safety guidelines issued by resorts and public services. This incident marks the fifth avalanche-related fatality in the Northern Alps during the 2024-2025 winter season.
