2 Backcountry Skiers are Killed in Avalanche Near Davos Despite Guide & Safety Gear, Marking the 11th Avalanche Death This Week in the Alps

An avalanche in the Swiss Alps claimed the lives of two skiers on Thursday afternoon, January 30, as they attempted to summit Sertig Pass, a popular backcountry route near Davos. A Swiss ski instructor and three guests had set out from Sertig Dörfli in the morning, making their way through the Chüealptal valley on their way to the 2,739-meter (8,985-foot) pass. Shortly before 1 p.m., two avalanches struck in quick succession, burying two members of the group completely and a third partially.

Rescue teams recovered the bodies of the two skiers, both Dutch nationals aged 31 and 35. Despite carrying avalanche transceivers and airbags, they did not survive and were pronounced dead at the scene. The response involved multiple rescue crews, including two Rega teams, helicopters from Heli Bernina and Swiss Helicopters, the Alpine police, and Swiss Alpine Club (SAC) rescuers with two avalanche dogs. A crisis team from Care Team Grischun was also deployed to support those affected.

The public prosecutor’s office and the Graubünden cantonal police have launched an investigation into the incident.

This marks the 11th avalanche death this week after a snowstorm hit the south side of the European Alps from Sunday to Tuesday, January 26-28. Eight people have died in France and three in Switzerland, including this most recent, tragic incident.
