Norwegian free skier Nikolai Schirmer captured a video of a huge avalanche on February 22 at the Bakhmaro ski area in Georgia. He posted the video on Instagram and described his decision to stay out of avalanche terrain that day. “We made the call to wait out this first sunny day after the storm and stay out of avalanche terrain. Pretty rare to get this kind of feedback on your decision making, watching another group make the opposite call. Glad everyone was okay,” Schirmer wrote in an Instagram post.
The town of Bakhmaro, Georgia, has been hit with snowstorms since February 18. Bakhmaro is a ski resort in the Lesser Caucasus Mountains of Georgia, near the town of Bakhmaro. The Bakhmaro resort is located at 1,926-2,050 meters above sea level in the Sochi and spruce-rich area of Kebbuli. The resort is known for its cat skiing and heli-skiing.

“Every winter the town of Bakhmaro is surrendered to winter. You’ll forgive the Georgian snow plowers for giving in to the unrelenting snowfall once you experience it for yourself. It’s been non-stop since we got here. My buddy claims it snows more in Bakhmaro than in Japan. The lights are still on in a few houses, though, and you can catch a ride up from where the road suddenly ends in untamed winter with a snowcat,” Schirmer wrote in a Facebook post.
The extreme weather also affected the FIS Freeride World Tour (FWT) by deciding to postpone the Georgia Pro after extensive efforts to secure the competition face and ensure safe riding conditions. Recent stabilization work on the Kaseb face triggered significant avalanches, rendering it unsuitable for competition. As a result, organizers have decided to relocate the event to an alternative venue. The competition will be rescheduled within the existing weather window, running from February 23 to March 1, with the new date to be announced at least two days in advance.
The National Environmental Agency reports that snow is expected again in Western Georgia from February 23-25, with heavy snowfall in some areas. Forecasters predict strong to very strong winds in coastal areas and a 4-6-point storm at sea, which refers to the strength of a storm based on the Beaufort Scale. This category of storm can cause moderate to strong winds and significant wave action. Air temperatures may drop to -4 to -6 degrees Celsius at night on the Kolkheti Plain. Fog, blizzards, and avalanche risks are expected in some mountainous and highland regions, along with road icing and potential power line freezing. Due to the challenging weather conditions, traffic may be restricted on certain roads and avalanche conditions are expected to be dangerous until the storm dissipates and the snow has time afterward to stabilize.
