An avalanche that struck a guided backcountry ski group near Castle Peak, California, has now been confirmed as the deadliest avalanche in modern state history, after authorities announced Wednesday that eight missing skiers were found dead, according to Nevada County officials and reporting from The New York Times. The avalanche occurred Tuesday morning near the Frog Lake huts outside Truckee, in a rugged backcountry zone popular with ski tourers. The group consisted of 15 people—including four guides—who were returning to the trailhead at the end of a three-day expedition when the slide hit around 11:30 a.m.
Six members of the party survived and were able to use emergency communication equipment to alert rescuers, Nevada County Sheriff Shannan Moon said. Two of those survivors were transported to a hospital after evacuation, while the others sustained varying injuries. Authorities said one skier remains missing as search efforts continue in extremely difficult conditions.
According to officials and forecasters cited by The New York Times, the region had been under a backcountry avalanche warning due to a powerful storm cycle that delivered heavy snowfall and strong winds across the northern Sierra Nevada. Nearly three feet of snow accumulated near Donner Peak in the 48 hours leading up to the avalanche, creating unstable conditions on top of a weak underlying snowpack. The Sierra Avalanche Center had warned that large avalanches could be easily triggered and advised against travel in avalanche terrain. Chris Feutrier, a supervisor with Tahoe National Forest, said the avalanche debris field stretched roughly the length of a football field.
Search operations have been repeatedly hindered by ongoing snowfall, avalanche hazards, and severe weather, which have remained the biggest challenges for rescuers. The skiers were clients and guides with Blackbird Mountain Guides and had been staying at the Frog Lake backcountry huts since February 15. The area sits below Castle Peak, a roughly 9,100-foot summit widely known among backcountry skiers. The group included nine women and six men, and survivors ranged in age from about 30 to 55.
Based on survivor accounts, members of the group were traveling relatively close together when someone shouted a warning just before the avalanche struck. Authorities said the victims were later found clustered in a similar area. Search teams are continuing the recovery for the final missing skier while also examining the circumstances surrounding the expedition. Sheriff Moon said investigators are reviewing decisions made before the trip, including whether to proceed despite forecasts warning of high avalanche danger.
“The backcountry is beautiful and attracts many recreationists,” Moon said during a news conference, according to The New York Times. “But Mother Nature doesn’t care.”
With eight confirmed fatalities, the Castle Peak avalanche is now considered the deadliest avalanche incident in modern California history. Search and recovery operations remain ongoing.
