A survivor who was carried roughly 600 feet (200 meters) down a mountain during a recent avalanche in northern Norway has shared a video outlining her account of what happened and emphasizing a desire to help others learn from the harrowing experience. The footage, posted to Instagram by Hannah Hughes, stems from a Wednesday, March 4 incident where a slide swept away a group of 13 ski tourists near Trollfjordvatnet. The avalanche left one person with minor injuries and briefly buried two members of the group for approximately 15 minutes.

In the caption accompanying the video, the Hughes stated that she does not believe in silver linings but hopes that detailing what went wrong might prevent future trauma for others. Noting that judgement without learning is all ego and absolutely pointless, the skier promised to share more about the group’s mistakes once their pain and drug-induced nausea subside. She also expressed profound gratitude for the other group members, adding that without them, she would undoubtedly be mourning more than just injuries.
The avalanche occurred in the remote Vesterålen region, an area located about 180 miles north of the Arctic Circle that has become a growing destination for international ski tourists seeking steep terrain. According to the Norwegian Avalanche Association, known as Varsom, Police operations manager Thomas Jarnæs Coe reported that authorities received an emergency call at 12:55 p.m. local time. Coe confirmed all 13 individuals were caught in the slide. Thanks to good weather conditions, the group was evacuated by a SAR Queen rescue helicopter to Helle Airport, with a helicopter doctor treating the injured person on-site before they were transported to a hospital.
The skiers were participating in a guided trip with SeilNorge, an adventure operator running ski-and-sail expeditions in the region. In a Facebook statement, SeilNorge acknowledged the inherent risks of backcountry travel despite thorough planning and safety routines, confirming they will prepare a formal report with professional experts to share lessons with the wider mountain community. At the time of the incident, the national avalanche warning service Varsom had issued a considerable Level 3 avalanche danger rating for the region, and forecasters continue to urge extreme caution due to recent snowfall and warming temperatures.
