“Yesterday, February 19, Selkirk Tangiers Heli Skiing experienced an avalanche that tragically took the life of one of our guests.
Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to the guest’s family and loved ones, and to all those affected during this incredibly difficult and painful time.
This is a deeply saddening moment for our entire community. We are thinking of everyone impacted and holding them in our thoughts.
We would also like to sincerely thank everyone for their support of our staff and guests. Your compassion and care mean more than we can express.
– Dave Pehowich, General Manager”
According to a preliminary report by Avalanche Canada,The avalanche struck in the Akolkolex River drainage, 12 miles (19 kilometers) southeast of Revelstoke, on a southeast-facing slope at 7,050 feet (2,150 meters) elevation. The skier, last in the group to descend, triggered the size 2 slab avalanche—260 feet (80 meters) wide with a 20 inch (50 centimeter) average crown depth—when their movement released a persistent slab problem at treeline.

Guides extracted the skier from 5 feet (1.5 meters) of snow and started CPR. A helicopter transported them to Queen Victoria Hospital in Revelstoke, where they succumbed to injuries, RCMP Cpl. Brett Urano told CBC. No other guests or guides suffered harm.
Pehowich noted Selkirk Tangiers prides itself on a culture of safety and best-in-class training, processes and protocols. He remarked, “Avalanches are one of many risks to people in mountains and, similar to many outdoor activities, it’s impossible to eliminate 100 per cent of the risks in the backcountry.”

Avalanche Canada rates the snowpack in the Monashee and Selkirk ranges at considerable danger—Level 3—where human-triggered slides are likely. On Thursday, they warned, “People continue to trigger large avalanches on the various weak layers within the snowpack. Continue to make conservative terrain choices to have a safe day.”
This marks Canada’s third avalanche death this winter. A snowmobiler died near Fernie on Tuesday after a similar burial. There have been 16 avalanche-related fatalities in the US this winter, with another person still missing. There have been 10, with one missing, in the last three days.
