A large avalanche triggered by snowmobilers near Riksgränsen, Sweden, on Wednesday, March 25, buried five people and left one person seriously injured. The massive slide involved around 30 people, prompting a large-scale emergency response involving rescue teams from both Sweden and Norway. At one stage, 10 people were feared to be buried, but numbers were later revised down.

The incident occurred around midday in Kårsavagge, a steep alpine valley just south of the resort, when a group of riders traveling along the well-known Rubens väg (“Rubens Wall”) route triggered a large-scale avalanche that swept away five people. According to the Swedish avalanche forecasting service “Lavinprognoser” by the Swedish Environmental Agency (SVELAV), the avalanche stretched up to 600 meters (2,000 feet) in length. Police were alerted at 12:51 p.m. but rescue services did not reach the remote site until 50 minutes later.
All five individuals were rescued, but three sustained injuries. Two Finnish nationals suffered minor injuries and were transported to hospital in Kiruna, while a 24-year-old Norwegian man was seriously injured and later transferred to Norway for further treatment. “It was quite chaotic,” mountain rescue operations manager Erik Lidström said in an interview with Swedish media outlet SVT. The avalanche occurred on a slope locally known as “Rubens Wall,” a steep and exposed face popular with snowmobilers and backcountry users.

The incident comes amid what experts describe as an exceptionally unstable snowpack across the region surrounding Abisko and Riksgränsen. The lavinprognoser website by SVELAV had warned that avalanche danger at the time was “very high,” particularly on slopes steeper than 25°. Recent conditions have led to a surge in human-triggered avalanches, the agency reported. “We’ve had an incredible number of avalanches triggered by skiers, snowmobilers, and our own employees during fieldwork,” said avalanche expert Mattias Tarestad of SVELAV.
Located deep in Sweden’s far north, near the Norwegian border, Riksgränsen is one of Europe’s most unique ski destinations. Located — as the name Riksgränsen (English: “national border”) implies — at the border between Norway and Sweden, the ski area is known for its long season, often running into June, thanks to its remote Arctic setting. The resort attracts advanced skiers, freeriders, and snowmobile enthusiasts seeking steep terrain and backcountry access. Unlike many North American resorts, much of the skiing and riding around Riksgränsen takes place in uncontrolled alpine terrain, where avalanche risk management falls largely on individuals.

Stefan Källström, coordinator of the police mountain rescue team, said in an interview with SVT that the incident was entirely preventable given the elevated avalanche warnings. “This type of snowmobiling has become popular, and often involves large groups. It’s a consequence of ignorance and a willingness to take risks, and young people are often involved,” he explained. He stressed the importance of reading and observing avalanche bulletins and not to underestimate the danger, or decide to take the risk anyway.
Despite the severity of the slide, the outcome could have been far worse. All five buried individuals were successfully located and extricated, a testament to both the rescue response and likely the presence of safety equipment and training of those in the backcountry. According to Swedish police, the five survivors were all extracted by other winter sport participants in the area at the time, as it took first responders nearly an hour to reach the area.
