Broad Peak Avalanche Update: 8 Bodies Recovered And Identified

Eight climbers are now confirmed dead following last week’s devastating avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan’s Karakoram, including legendary mountaineer Nims Dai Purja, according to updates from the Alpine Club of Pakistan (ACP). Rescue teams have recovered and identified eight of the 10 climbers caught in the avalanche on Thursday, July 30. Two climbers remain unaccounted for, although all 10 are now presumed dead.

The latest ACP update confirmed that the remains of four climbers are currently being brought down from the mountain by a Pakistani-Nepali ground rescue team:



Nims Dai Purja from Nepal

Wang Zhong from China

Nima Sherpa from Nepal

Kili Pemba Sherpa “Kilu” from Nepal





The recovery operation remains ongoing under extremely dangerous conditions on Broad Peak, which rises to 8,047 meters (26,401 feet) and is the world’s 12th-highest mountain. The ACP also confirmed that one additional body has been located at a significantly higher elevation but said recovery is unlikely at this stage due to the extreme terrain and conditions. “The ground rescue team has reached Nirmal Purja ‘Nims Dai’ at approximately 5,700m on Broad Peak, where three additional bodies have also been sighted, though their identities remain unconfirmed,” the Alpine Club of Pakistan said in an update.

The remains of Nepali guides Pur Bahadur Gurung “Yukta” and Gyalu Sherpa as well as American climber Mallory Geis and Omani climber Nadhira Al Harthy were recovered yesterday. Two climbers remain unidentified and unrecovered, which are Nepali guide Nawang Thindu Sherpa and Pakistani guide Sohail Sakhi.

The Broad Peak avalanche struck between Camp 2 and Camp 3 on Thursday morning during an international expedition involving teams from Elite Exped, Seven Summit Treks, and Imagine Nepal. The avalanche cut communications with the climbers, but rescue efforts were delayed until authorities were notified in the evening. Poor weather and dangerous mountain conditions have repeatedly limited helicopter operations, forcing rescuers to rely primarily on ground teams.

The recovery mission of those lost in the Broad Peak avalanche is being led by experienced local climbers including Sirbaz Khan and Sherzad, and supported by Nepali climbers Mingma G and Mingma David.
