One patroller was successfully extracted from the scene and is responsive, while the other suffered serious injuries and was rushed to Mammoth Hospital before being airlifted for advanced care.

“At approximately 11:30 AM today, two Mammoth Mountain Ski Patrol staff were caught in an avalanche on Lincoln Mountain. The slide occurred during avalanche mitigation work, following a significant Sierra snowstorm, where approximately 6 feet of snow fell in the last 36 hours.

The first patroller was recovered at the scene uninjured; the second patroller was transported to Mammoth Hospital with serious injuries and later flown out of the area for further care.

The area was closed to the public at the time of the incident.

The entire mountain and lift operations were closed at 12:00 PM for the day.”

– Official statement

Mammoth Mountain officials decided to suspend all lift operations at noon, effectively shutting down the entire resort for the remainder of the day. The closure was a precaution to ensure guest safety amid the heightened avalanche risk. In just 36 hours, Mammoth has received almost six feet of snow.

The Eastern Sierra Avalanche Center had issued a high avalanche danger warning for the region, citing the potential for avalanches of historic proportions.

“Very dangerous avalanche conditions exist today. Large natural avalanches are likely at all elevations. Travel in or beneath avalanche terrain is not recommended.”

Mammoth Mountain has announced that all operations will be delayed tomorrow, Saturday, February 15. Visitors should stay informed about current conditions and adhere to all safety guidelines.

“Operations Update for Saturday, February 15: Due to extreme avalanche danger, all mountain operations will be delayed. We will focus our efforts first at Canyon and Eagle Lodge, however, lifts are not expected to spin prior to 10AM. All lifts will need to be individually assessed, dug out and proper mitigation must take place before any terrain opens. Patience will need to be practiced tomorrow – stay tuned for updates in the morning.”

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.

In the Lake Tahoe region, Palisades Tahoe also reported two small inbound avalanches this morning. Nobody was injured.
