Rising Bulgarian snowboard star Malena Zamfirova injured in training accident in Czech Republic

Bulgarian snowboarder Malena Zamfirova was seriously injured after training ahead of the FIS Snowboard Alpine World Cup in Špindlerův Mlýn this weekend.

The collision caused multiple fractures and the Bulgarian athlete was airlifted to hospital, where she received urgent medical treatment.

The skier suffered chest, back, and abdominal injuries and was airlifted to a hospital in Liberec by air ambulance, the mountain rescue service reported on Wednesday. Blood tests for alcohol were taken at a Czech hospital, and the results were negative. No charges have been filed. If found guilty, they could face up to two years in prison.

Due to the severity of her injuries, Malena’s season has unfortunately come to an early end. The 16-year-old, already considered one of Bulgaria’s most promising winter sports talents, has made a remarkable impact on the World Cup tour with three podium finishes so far — including a third place in Krynica just a few days ago
