Two Injured in October Avalanche Near Eklutna Lake, AK — Dog Still Missing

Two people were caught in an avalanche near Pepper Peak in Alaska’s Chugach State Park on Saturday, October 10. Both were rescued and are in stable condition, although one suffered serious injuries. A dog that was with them remains missing, according to a public appeal from the injured man’s partner.

The avalanche occurred on a ridge between Pepper Peak and Salt Peak, north of Eklutna Lake, according to a post by Lauren Joy Padawer. The pair activated EMS according to the preliminary report by Chugach National Forest Avalanche Center. The two men were rescued with assistance from pararescuers, commonly known as PJs.

Padawer said both men were in stable condition and had a very good prognosis for full recovery. She confirmed, however, that her partner sustained serious injuries.

The incident has also prompted an appeal for help locating the dog, which was with the men when the avalanche occurred.

Padawer, who said she was out of the country, reported that the dog’s Apple AirTag showed its last known location in Chugach State Park. She appealed to anyone in the area who might be able to help search for the animal, adding that it was not known whether the dog had survived. The dog’s name is Lou Lou.

Anyone who may be able to assist can contact Padawer through her original social media post.

October Is Avalanche Season in Alaska

Friends of Chugach Avalanche also reported receiving information about an avalanche with injuries north of Eklutna Lake on Saturday, noting that details were limited. The group used the incident to remind people that October can bring avalanche danger in Alaska, particularly for hunters and hikers venturing into the mountains as winter conditions begin to develop.

Early-season snow can create hazardous conditions even before the main winter recreation season begins. Anyone heading into avalanche terrain should check current forecasts, assess conditions, and carry appropriate rescue equipment.

Further details about the avalanche, including the circumstances that led to the incident, have not been confirmed in the available reports. SnowBrains endeavours to keep readers updated as more information becomes available.
