An avalanche that swept through a group of six backcountry skiers near the Pico Tablato in the Spanish Pyrenees on Monday, December 29, has left three people dead and one with hypothermia injuries.
The avalanche occurred around 1 p.m. on Monday near the spa town of Panticosa, in the province of Huesca. Six ski tourers were caught when a wind-slab avalanche broke loose, according to Guardia Civil for the Aragon region.

The victims have been identified as 55-year-old Jorge García Dihinx—a renowned pediatrician, influencer, and passionate mountaineer—his 36-year-old wife Natalia Román, as well as 48-year-old Eneko Arrastua. The person with hypothermia was only identified as a young woman, while two male skiers were said to have escaped unharmed. The latter two allegedly alerted emergency services.
According to initial reports, the avalanche was caused by an ice slab that broke loose at approximately 2,800 meters (9,186 feet) and then hit soft, unstable layers of snow. The region had seen fresh snowfalls over Christmas, and the Guardia Civil stated that the avalanche was triggered on a wind-loaded slope. The three deceased members of the group were carried several hundred meters downhill by the massive avalanche.

The event is the deadliest avalanche of the 2025-26 season in Europe so far.
