A rare inbound avalanche occurred today and impacted the lower-mountain chairlift at Alyeska Resort, Alaska, forcing the lift to close. The avalanche closed Chair 4, Ted’s Express, which takes skiers and snowboarders from the base to mid-mountain.
Alyeska posted on its website:
Change Of Plans…
Due to unsafe conditions on the upper mountain, lift operations will be limited to Chair 7 and the Bear Cub Quad today from 10:00am to 5:00pm. The Tram will remain open for foot passengers only with a 2:30pm final upload and 3:00pm final download. Then, the Tram will reopen for Seven Glaciers service at 4:30pm, with possible weather delays. Our teams are keeping a close eye on conditions and will provide updates as things evolve. We appreciate the patience and understanding, we’re all in it together.
There have been inbounds avalanches at Alyeska Resort in the past, although they are rare. An inbounds avalanche above Glacier Bowl at Alyeska Resort occurred on January 27, 2025, and prompted the temporary closure of upper mountain terrain, including the Tram and Glacier Bowl Express. No injuries were reported. A significant avalanche in the Upper Glacier Bowl at Alyeska Resort, Alaska, on April 29, 2024, forced the resort to limit terrain and operations on its closing day that season. A rare 30-year-event avalanche also happened at Alyeska and was classified as a D4 avalanche on May 11th, 2023, on a section of the North Face that the mountain team was closely monitoring. The avalanche crown was between 6 and 10 feet and likely slid on the November 22nd crust. The snow piled in the kettle ponds on the mountain, causing them to overflow and flood the tram base, and drained into the hotel pond. Other avalanches also slid under Shadows and Max’s.

The resort has seen 285″ of snow this season, with five falling in the last 24 hours, and has a 105″ base at the summit.
